i usually use a concept 2 for rowing workouts, and found this model to be quieter but lacked the resistance I'm used to. This may explain why there is such a descrepancy in the minutes it takes to reach any given distance. I average around 5:40 on the concept 2 and close to 16 minuets on the LifeSpan for 1 mile. I now just use time instead of distance to measure my workouts. Still a great value for a home gym

He competes in harescrambles which is riding his motorcycle through the woods for up to 3 hrs. at a time on a track of at least 9 miles or more for each lap. It is very competitive. Bought this rower as a gift to myself as I have a difficult time getting outside in the winter months due to snow and cold. I exercise on a regular basis and wanted something that was low impact and quiet enough to have in my bedroom for use when watching the news at night. The first week or two of use I felt like I wasn't getting much of a workout. I row for about 1000 strokes everyday. I now can feel the burn. It is really doing wonders for my legs and arms. It is quiet enough to use while watching tv which makes it easy to get my workout in. I am so glad that I made this purchase.

We were very disappointed in the digital display/readout. It is cheaply made and falls out repeatedly. Ours never worked correctly even after putting in new batteries. The readouts don't make any sense either. Machine works fine, just have to do your own mental calculations using time and/or strokes.

I have COPD and this provides a great workout of the whole CV system. I wish it had more resistance, but I also lift weights and have pulley's so it is no big deal. Half an hour at the medium setting is perfect for a great cardiovascular workout for me. The display is basic, but works well.

I watch tv while I row 3X a day and there is no noise to deal with. Low impact so no back worries. Smooth ride, monitor shows time rowed, etc., The only bad thing so far is that the monitor shuts down mid row and starts over at 0 so I need it replaced, lol.

I have been an avid treadmill user for several years and just recently decided to try a rower thanks to an increasing waistline and knees that have finally succumbed to years of abuse. I hopped on the rower for the first time for 20 minutes on a low setting and I was absolutely thrilled at the intense workout. I got a good workout in my arms, shoulders, legs, back, and even my pecs were sore the next morning. All the while receiving a great cardio workout.

The rower was easy to put together and has not wobbled one time with my 250 lb. frame. The machine is silent and I can easily watch the TV or listen to music without having to turn the volume up extraordinarily high.

I have yet to find any negatives about the rower even though I spent a little more than I intended because of the weight capacities of the cheaper models. I don't think I would have been as happy with the aluminum based models as I am with this one.

Assembly was easy, and it is a sturdy machine. Although there are only 5 tension settings, there is enough range to give you a good workout whether you are doing endurance or strength.
The electronic display is not a selling point with this model. It doesn't do much beyond measuring time, speed, and calories burned. And reseting the clock is not intuitive.

I use my rower for a cardio workout that burns the calories like crazy because it uses my whole body. I do moderate, consistent intensity or mix it up with high/low intensity intervals.
I love the workout I get!
Pros: Simple to use, sturdy.
Cons: The display had minimal information and has proven to be inaccurate for distance and calories burned. There is no option to switch between km and miles (or kph and mph). The calories burned is so far off its laughable! The other con is that I have to pause to change the resistance level for my intervals, but its hard to avoid that with a magnetic resistance rower.

I'm trying to get in shape and I love using the rower and this one I really like. [...]. It was very easy to put together, even for a female. It's very quiet and glides easily. I thought the seat would be hard plastic and was ecstatic to find that it was cushy. I read a review about the front come up during a vigorous workout but I haven't had that problem. The only thing I was disappointed in is that it doesn't come with how to use instructions, only how to put it together instructions. For the money I think it's well worth it right now, we will see over time if the quality stands up to the test of time.

The equipment was easy to put together. About 15 min. I have used the rower about 6 times. The only problem I have is being able to see the readout because the strap hides the display. The readout panel should be above the strap not below. But this is a miner inconvenience. I think it was worth the money.

This machine turned out to be a great purchase. I use it for about 20min. a day. I can definately feel the strengthening in my back, arms, legs, and a bit of my stomach area. Putting it together was pretty easy, but definately need two people with this. I also think its great that they include "Lifespan fitness club" in this product as well. You can track your exercises and weight loss as you go.

The only con, and its probably not even worth mentioning, b/c the pros certainly do out weigh it. Its storable, but difficult for one person to do themselves.

As I say in the title, the RW1000 is smooth and quiet...and very sturdy. The lockpin raises the midsection and keeps the flywheel mechanism firmly planted. Resistance levels are good. I generally use levels 2 and 3 for 30 minutes but I'm a cyclist so my upper body is weak. Hoping to work my way up to level 5 for a full hour using my upper body primarily.

I purchased this at a local leisurefitness store. It comes in two relatively lightweight boxes and takes about an hour to assemble. It does fold up but its best to leave it available so as to hop on it any time with ease.
The only con is that the display is hard to read (too low) and very cheap. But the models with better displays are far more expensive..and this machine is much quieter...virtually silent. Set it beside the tv and you're all set.

This rower does all that I was expecting of a machine such as this. It is quiet and smooth and gives me a great workout. The six levels should be sufficient for all except perhaps the most abnormally athletic among us. The display is not as accurate for calories or other such... but that's ok. Being new to rowing, I had to go online to find some training on technique... which was very helpful by the way. All in all I am VERY please with this machine.

This item arrived on time and was relatively easy to unpack and setup all by myself. It is quiet and appears to work as advertised... only had it less than a week. It is smooth and quiet and I can definitely feel the changes that the different settings bring about. I've no doubt that even the most serious athlete could get a workout they be proud of.Being new to rowing I did have to go online to get instructions for proper rowing technique. There are several sites that show this and even some youtube videos. As far asd the display goes... it's a mixed bag. Strokes per min and total strokes are okay... and the elapsed time... but the calculations (calories et. al)leave much to be desired. But overall, it is an excellent machine that is well worth the money... a real bargain in a day when that is rare.

Nice sturdy machine. Somewhat quiet for a rower, which are usually rather loud. and it was easy to put together. The cons for me were that I bought it because I was told It could be folded up and easily rolled to another room. I wanted to store it in an unused bedroom, but use it in the living room, so I could watch tv and work out. It does fold rather easily, but is still large when it does fold up...but it does not roll. you must lift it from room to room and it is 80lbs. Other than this i am conpletely satisfied with this purchase and would highly recommend it.

I swim regularly and wanted to add rowing to my work-out routines. I have had this machine for a couple weeks and it is everything I expected. Smooth Operation, easy to use and set up.

The only issue I have had is with the computer. The calories and distance stats don't work very accurately. I base my work-outs now on time and number of strokes. Other than that, it works well.

The rower is excellent for the price it really is.

However, the on board computer is useless. It's only attached up to a censor that detects how many times your butt passes a certain point, meaning all the rower's computer can tell you is how many strokes you have done. It doesn't take into consideration how hard you're pulling, or what resistance you have the rower set to. Ie my wife can row gently for 30 mins and row 1.1 miles, i can row for 30 mins to the point where sweat is dripping off my face and I feel like i want to die and it says I've rowed 1.0 miles. I'm taller than my wife so I pass the censor less often.

The computer has stroke per min, number of strokes, time, speed, distance and calories burnt. Only the first 3 can be considered accurate, other 3 may as well not be included.

However, the computer is my only problem with this rower, everything else is excellent for the price you pay.

I have had two hiatal hernia repairs in the past 5 years. I use to lift weights like a powerlifter...the more weight, the better. I gained a good amount of muscle mass over the years. I am 38 years old, and weigh around 260. Since my last surgery to correct my hernia, I was told I could never lift over 100 lbs. This is NOT very much weight for me. I had to find a way to exercise without losing muscle mass and keeping my fat levels down. I rode a stationary bike, with okay results, but grew board with it fast over the winter time.

This rowing machine is solid, quiet, and challenging. I have worked muscles that I haven't been able to work since my surgery. It feels great. It doesn't even flinch at my weight. I can wheel it out of it's storage spot, and set it up in front of my tv in seconds, literally. I have rowed on the commercial machines. This one feels no different. 5 stars!

I've owned this LifeSpan for over a month now. I was hesitant about submitting a review until I had put some use into the RW1000. I am also hesitant, in that I should be reviewing this product and not poo-pooing my previous rower. That experience was a prime example of getting what you pay for.
The RW1000 has a very sturdy base & is quite stable. It operates smoothly, but could be a little, just a little quieter. It provides a different workout than my previous mount - more in the upper thigh, buttocks & middle back.
A couple minor inconveniences: bringing it out of storage mode is a little ponderous as the RW1000 has some weight. To get the lock pin into its' exercise mode requires lifting the weight off the middle.
While the RW is pricier than a starter rower, I think I will get much more life out of this unit

I use this product almost every day for about 20 to 40 minutes each time. You can get a good aerobic session by pulling the bar straight back. But for added effect, such as additional work for abs, pull straight back at beginning of stroke and then lift up as if actually rowing a real boat. Do the opposite on the return stroke. Feel and watch abs get exercised. A great workout without feeling beaten down.

Great for tall folks. I'm 6'4" and 37" legs. Can get full leg extensions/range of motion if rear stop pin is not installed. Very quiet with smooth motion. Has 5 tension settings that seem to handle what I need. The electronic pad never really worked even when new. Display sputtered and never really kept accurate count or time.

I use it as an esay-to-use and easy-t-store backup for days that I can't get out doors or to the gym. It's a good machine, but not great. The seat slipped fell a few times when in its folded setup and broke the tension handle. Also, the pull strap seems like it one hold up under a lot of heavy use, but time will tell. All in all, the privce is cheap and fair, but you get what you pay for.

I bought this machine and started using it on a regular basis and after about two weeks I noticed a dark residue on the track where the seat moves back and forth. It appears that the "wheels" that the seat rests on are breaking down and leaving a track of powerized plastic on the rail. This powderized stuff is the wheels wearing out. I expect things to wear out over time but an exercise machine should not be doing this after only two weeks. I think the quality of this machine is NOT very good and would NOT recommend anyone to purchase it. I now have it up for sale and will look for a higher quality machine elsewhere. I feel like I wasted my money on this machine. Question: Why are plastic parts used for a part of this machine that bears the weight of the user. This particular machine has a weight limit of 300 pounds for the user. I am under 200 pounds. Maybe it would hold up with a 98 pound user. A cheap product that was not cheap to buy!

Fantastic product! It was very easy to put together; I did it myself in under 30 minutes, and I'm in no way mechanically inclined. It's also virtually silent - we have the machine in our bedroom and my boyfriend can sleep through my morning workouts totally undisturbed. It offers a smooth range of motion and seems to be very sturdy, though we're both on the smaller side so I'm not sure if it would perform as well for larger individuals. Was looking for a good complement to our elliptical, and this seems to work well. It is quiet and smooth. I researched several reviews and specs. The slide length is great (as was described on the website) for taller folks - I'm over 6'1". Also, it seems real sturdy. It is everything I need in a rower and was priced right. Hope to get much more use out of it.

I'm 6'4" 270lbs, overweight but strong so it was important that I get a sturdy machine that was going to give me a decent workout.
This is a very smooth and quiet machine, which is nice because I can watch the Simpsons without headphones. I wish it had more resistance (already on the highest setting) but I can work around it by putting the back end on blocks so I'm lifting more of my body weight. Overall very happy, I feel like the machine is going to last.

I was told by my back doctor to look into rowing machines. I searched and searched, and read a lot of reviews. By far this one stood out. It is super easy to put together. I live on the 2nd floor apartment the machine is very quiet, not complaints from the neighbors yet!!!

This is a great rowing machine--fun and easy to use, and not obtrustive in size or sound. The one very minor problem I had is that the pin that you reinsert after you fold out the machine is difficult to get in until you know that there is a trick to it (hyper-extending the part of the machine with the seat on it). But still, GREAT deal. For real.

The product is adequate. I formerly had a very loud Concept rower that had great action. I got rid of it after losing more than 50 pounds because I had developed a lothing for it. I put 12 pounds back on and decided to get another rower. The RW1000 does not operate as smoothly, but it sure is quiet, which is what I was looking for.

I exercise 25-30 minutes every day after I get home from work (alternate between the rower & our elliptical). This rowing machine is much better than the cheaper one I bought first. It is a good mid quality machine, it accommodates my 6’ 3” frame well and stores fairly well in my small apartment. The seat is a bit hard after 30 or so minuets. If you can afford and have room for the step up machines, it is worth the money. With limited room and budget, this has been a very good machine, smooth and clean to use, I am pleased with the product in relation to the very reasonable cost. I use it 4 times a week, 30 minutes or more at a time, no problems in the several months I have owned it.

This is our first experience with a rowing machine. We bought it on blind faith and, so far, we are very happy with it. Neither my husband nor I have been regular exercisers and, because we are lazy, we wanted to work all the major muscle groups at once. The rower really delivers. Once you get into a rhythm, it's actually kind of fun and we have been faithfully using it every day. The machine was easy to assemble and is very easy to use. Our rowing machine was delivered right on schedule and we are very pleased with this rower and the whole transaction.

Not as smooth in operation as the higher end rowers, but then again it is half the price. I am 6-7 and 330 lbs, and it works for me. It is only rated for 300 pounds, so time will tell if the seat bearings will hold up. Hopefully it will help me drop below the weight limit!
